Student Guide for Personal Computers
Target Audience: Day & resident students with their own computer using the WPS Internet & printers.
Revision: 2006-06-29_1400
Qualification & Registration
If you are not going use your computer with the WPS Internet connection, nor the WPS printing system, then you don't need to do anything on these pages. However, if you do want to do either of these things, then you must first make sure that it is qualified, then get it registered.
The following computers are automatically considered qualified & need no modification:
Apple MacOS X computers (10.[2-4] with all the latest Security Updates auto-installed).
Linux computers (no dual-boot, no emulators) & other UNIX-based computers.
Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (or McAfee AntiVirus <or> AVG at grisoft.com <or> "Trend Micro").
You must have the latest Virus Definitions & a registered subscription that will last until the next (July 1st). Note, if you have an AntiVirus program that is a "Corporate Edition", then you do NOT have an expiraion date but your computer IS considered qualified.
If you are using Windows XP, then you must have Service Pack 2 installed. If you are using Windows 2000, then you must install Service Pack 4. To check for this, click on the "Start" menu; right-click on the "My Computer" icon; click on "Properties"; click on the "General" tab; under "System", it should say "Service Pack 2". If it does not, you need to install it.
You must also have Windows Auto-Update engaged. To check for this, click on the "Start" menu; click on Control Panel).
Policy
You are responsible for abiding by the polices in the handbook. Make sure that your computer complies with them. You are responsible for what you computer does (including preventing other computers from working properly, getting viruses, viewing indecent websites and being used by other people). WPS Technology reserves the right to ensure that a NON-WPS-Owned computer does not connect to the WPS network by confiscation. You will not be allowed to do anything (even with your own equipment) that interferes with WPS computers or network. Access to other services not explicitly listed here is not allowed. See the WPS handbook for details. Service is only assured to work when PG&E electrical mains are on & SBC Internet is fully operational. Additionally, service is only monitored & repaired weekdays from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. and only when students are in session (not on vacations).
Outside Help
WPS Technology Department can only spend time to working on WPS-Owned Computers (printers, etc). We can only advise owners of other computers for scheduled periods. For more service, we recommend the following:
 Action Computer: 408-739-0316 x4
 Apple Computer: (Palo Alto) 650-617-9000
 CompUSA: 408-554-1733
 1800 WE-FIX-MACS
None of these people (or stores) are allowed to change the WPS-Owned computers, printers or cables. unless they are given explicit permission each time by the WPS Technology Department.
WPS Technology staff may setup computers at the beginning of the year to use Internet & to print to WPS printers. We are not allowed to spend time repairing or troubleshooting other people's computers. You must buy an individual copy of AntiVirus for each computer. We recommend getting a 3-year warranty for all laptop computers because they tend to get damaged more then desktops.
How to Sign Up
To use your computer on the WPS campus, using the WPS-Owned Internet connection and/or printers , then do these steps: 1) Make sure your computer meets the qualifications above. 2) Fill out the form below and bring it to the Technology Office.

Internet Help & Workarounds
If your WPS Internet connection was working before (you were able to get to www.yahoo.com) and now it is not working then the best thing you can do is ask 1-2 other people who are using NON-WPS-Owned computers if they are able to use the Internet.
If they are, then it is likely that something has changed on your computer. Check that all network cables are plugged in firmly and that you are near a WPS building (if you are using wireless Internet).
Check that your web browser has the proxy turned ON. If you are a residential student, then goto the dorm office & see if the Network Monitor says that Yahoo or Google is down (red) or up (green).
If you are still having troubles, then do these two things:
1. If a WPS-Owned computer is working on the Internet, then use that. You can use computers in the Computer Lab, Library (and dorm office for residential students).
2. Report this problem to a faculty member & please do ALL the tests in the checklist below (copy this page first, or write in pencil so that you can re-use this page, if needed):

NOTE: Sometimes Internet Explorer gets randomly messed up and will not work. Use the reliable, fast and secure FireFox web browser (www.getfirefox.com). For Internet slowdowns, check to see who else is online & ask them to stop downloading (if they are doing that). Long downloads (over 3 minutes long) slow down the Internet connection enormously. Everyone shares the same Internet connection, so be sure to check both Anselm house & Benedict house for large downloads. FYI: On-campus faculty don't tend to do large downloads, so this is not a factor.
Printing Help & Workarounds
If you have been able to print to a WPS-Owned printer before and now it is not working then the best thing you can do is ask 1-2 other people who are using NON-WPS-Owned computers if they are able to print to the same printer.
If they are, then it is likely that something has changed on your computer. Check that all cables are plugged in firmly and that you are near a WPS building (only if you are using wireless. The chapel is NOT covered).
If other people are NOT able to print, then do these two things:
1. Copy your files to a floppy or burn a CD and take that to a WPS-Owned computer and use that to print with (nearby ones, computer lab & library computers are usually available). You can also eMail yourself the file.
2. Report this problem to a faculty member & please do ALL the things in the checklist below (copy this page or write in pencil so you can re-use this paper if needed):
| Date & Time: ___________________ | ||
